About Annie

Annie Wilkins

Hi! My name is Annie. I specialise in providing student-led and experience-focused lessons, accommodating for each pupil’s unique learning needs. I offer a range of evidence-based teaching methods, with particular awareness of Music Performance Anxiety. Learning to play an instrument is more than just acquiring another skill - it improves confidence, allows us to express ourselves authentically, provides challenges, improves discipline and concentration, and more importantly, is fun!

I held a teaching post as a piano and music tutor in an independent secondary school, offering 1:1 piano and music theory lessons to children aged 11-18. I have experience as an accredited piano teacher with Derbyshire Music Hub, working with children aged 7-11, in addition to teaching adults privately.

What to expect in my lessons

My lessons encourage pupils to engage creatively and proactively right from the start. I provide a solid grounding in technical skills, music theory knowledge and listening and aural skills. Lessons will normally consist of a warm-up of scales and arpeggios, which help us to wake up our muscles and our brains. Some appropriate technical discussions or exercises often follow, and then more dedicated work on pieces. I prefer an adaptive approach, meaning the techniques I teach are dictated by the type of music being learned.

Frequently Asked Questions

To begin with, an electric keyboard with weighted keys is a good first option to learn the piano. However, I strongly recommend learning to play on a traditional piano.

No – absolute beginners are welcome. Lessons will cover everything you need to know to help you learn at a pace which suits you.

Absolutely. We will start by gauging your current level, identify any gaps in knowledge, potentially revise some ideas, and take it from there.

I believe preparing and taking public examinations through a structured curriculum such as ABRSM aids motivation, progression, and offers challenges for all abilities.

I have supported pupils struggling with music performance anxiety and helped them achieve excellent marks, boosting confidence and pride.

However, examinations are optional—there are many fun, challenging ways to learn without them.

Playing the piano requires coordination between brain and body. The more time you invest, the better the results.

Research shows that structured, consistent practice helps muscle memory, accuracy, and enjoyment.

I encourage all pupils to keep a regular practice routine, and I provide strategies for busy schedules.

It depends on the child. If there is interest and willingness, children can start from around 5–6 years old. Lessons will be tailored with appropriate pacing and breaks.
